At the age of 86, he stands as a symbol of resistance, a poet, essayist, and dissident. On April 16th, at the “Agimi” Art Center, the documentary portraying his life was showcased. Directed by Saimir Bajo<\/a><\/strong>, “The Decadent No. 2419<\/strong>” unfolds the journey of the globally renowned Lithuanian figure, Tomas Venclova, sharing pivotal moments of his life on screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His connection with Albania is longstanding. His first visit was in 1995 after communism, paving the way for subsequent visits, which are documented in the film. During these journeys, including a stop in Vlor\u00eb, he became acquainted with our country, noting the noticeable transformation of Tirana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Naturally, it’s entirely different. I remember Tirana being very poor and small. To tell you the truth, it was a polluted city. It was around 1995 when I came from Bari to Durr\u00ebs, then to Tirana, and then to Gjirokast\u00ebr, from where we departed for Greece. After that visit, I’ve been here four or five more times. So, I’m very happy that we’re now presenting this film to the audience in Tirana. I truly enjoyed it. It’s the first collaboration between Albania and Lithuania in the field of cinema. And it’s a pleasure to see that quite a few people came to watch it,” he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the actions of Soviet dissidents, co-founder of the Lithuanian Helsinki Group in 1976, Tomas Venclova was forced to leave his country in 1977. Emigrating to the USA, he became a globally recognized intellectual voice. Saimir Bajo<\/strong>, who worked for four years to bring his life as close to reality as possible, expresses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s a complete and unique documentary in the world about the dissident and famous poet Tomas Venclova, filmed in 5 countries, including Lithuania, Poland, Albania, Montenegro, and America. It’s a long and complex work in archives to show an event that not only is a complete and unique portrait in the world of the great poet Tomas Venclova but is the history of the twentieth century of Lithuania. And I as a director made such a choice, where I saw Tomas as an ‘Ulysses’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in fact, his life is like the life of an ‘Ulysses’ or ‘Odysseus’, who after all the battles and losses, his victories, his loves, reaches that peak through poetry, overcoming those spaces of a small country like Lithuania. So there’s an empathy towards him, but without making it pathetic. For me, he’s a hero, an intellectual, poet, dissident, great professor, one of the greatest essayists in the world as well, a translator. So he’s multidimensional. But I also decided to include antagonists that you might see because not always the main character in a small country where there are problems and with the past, where some issues cannot be touched upon, such as the issue of Jews, etc., which I include in the documentary,” expresses the director and co-screenwriter Saimir Bajo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of the documentary is also Tomas’s father, a Soviet poet and politician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As you saw in the documentary, Tomas’s father was one of the greatest poets and intellectuals of Lithuania, but he was a Stalinist, and this is unforgiven by a part of the population to this day. On the other hand, Tomas is a dissident, the opposite of what his father was. But in a way, since he was human and his father, as he says in poetry, in the documentary as well, that ‘father is father and it’s not like he chooses.’ So, I tried to make something that is real from my director’s point of view. The fact that I’ve been in exile for 30 years brought us closer, made me understand him better, and transmit this to a Lithuanian but also Albanian and global audience,” further explains Bajo.<\/strong>

Tomas Venclova is as important and well-known as V\u00e1clav Havel. An emeritus professor at Yale University and the greatest intellectual and poet not only in Lithuania and Central Europe but also famous in America and the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
